Lam Watah Trail

Cindy and Shanna and other hikers ready for the
first hike of Camp W.
First hike of Camp W for the week is always the Lam Watah Trail. We like to look nice for this hike because it ends at the camps private beach on Lake Tahoe and we meet Sharon for our official camp picture. No driving we walk to it right from camp.

Here are Cindy and Shanna again.
Lam Watah Trail: The trail head is located on the corner of US Highway 50 and Kahle Drive. The hike is 1.1 miles.

Walking down the Camp W driveway on way to trail.
Beautiful little pond along the trail.
Some dogs stop for a swim.
Historically, the South Shore was home to the Washoe Indian tribe, who came to the South Shore in the summer to enjoy the cool weather, the excellent fishing and to gather flowers and plants that were used as medicine. The Washoe called the lake "Da ow a ga" or Lake of the Sky. Faulty translation resulted in "Tahoe." The Washoe would camp in a meadow bordering the edge of what is now Stateline, across from the Lakeside Inn where Tahoe's first airport was built. The meadow is still there, fortunately, the land was purchased by the Nature Conservancy and then donated to the National Forest Service.

The Lam Watah Trail, with a name derived from a Washoe Indian phrase meaning permanent mortar by the stream. It includes many boulders with depressions where Washoe women used “pounding rocks” for grinding and preparing food during the summer and processed dried food for the winter. Along with such features as a willow-lined pond, flower-covered meadows, a sprightly stream, and stands of pine forest, several interpretive signs placed alongside the trail provide insights into the natural and human history of the area. The path ultimately leads to Nevada Beach.

Once at the beach we headed for Sharon to get our pictures. This is always a fun time when she and Barbara take ID photos for the board. We snapped a few pictures behind the photographers as she took pictures of our friends.
Larry, daughter Mandy and Chaco.
Nancy, Aiden and Gizmo.
Karin and Corey.
Franny, Miss C and Sally.
Shanna with Holly & Alaska.
Cindy and Ziva.
After pictures it was time for a little beach water play with the Shelties. Barking and chasing each other is big fun for them.

Next we had a mandatory meeting with Lori where we talked about dog behavior and manners so that all the dogs can live together peacefully for the week we are here at camp.

Back to the cabin and then off to lunch.
